Abstract

Soybean production in Washim District, Maharashtra, is affected by plant-parasitic nematodes, yet field-level information on farmer awareness, infestation patterns, management practices, and perceived effectiveness remains limited. This study examined management strategies and control activities used by soybean farmers for nematode infestation. Data were collected from 210 farmers using a structured questionnaire and field observations, supplemented by secondary sources, and were analysed using descriptive statistical methods. Forty-three per cent of respondents reported being very aware of nematode-related diseases, while 52% identified Meloidogyne incognita as the most commonly recognised nematode. Nematode infestation was reported every season by 42% of farmers, and sandy soil was identified as the most vulnerable soil type by 52%. Yield loss exceeding 40% was reported by 61% of respondents. Crop rotation (53%) and deep ploughing (29%) were the most commonly reported cultural practices. Among biological options, Paecilomyces lilacinus was reported by 58% of farmers, whereas fluopyram was the most commonly reported chemical nematicide (46%). Farmers' assessment of existing control practices remained cautious: 64% were neutral and 29% were dissatisfied. The findings indicate that farmers use multiple cultural, biological, and chemical approaches, but perceived effectiveness is inconsistent. Greater emphasis on integrated nematode management, farmer training, accessible biological inputs, and institutional support may improve the sustainability of soybean nematode management in the study area.
